Plugged In: Free Wi-Fi for low-income sites

Two low-income housing communities in Sacramento will offer their residents free Wi-Fi Internet access and computers later this fall.

Residents of the 76 units at Evergreen Estates and Victory Townhomes developments near the Capital City Freeway and Arden Way will receive computers, Internet access and training as part of a $100,000 grant from the Community Technology Foundation of California. The grant will be administered by the Sacramento Mutual Housing Association.

Organizers hope residents will use computers and Internet access to further their education, hunt for jobs, sign up for online banking and research health care options.

"This is about education and skill-building," said Anne-Marie Flynn, who's coordinating the SMHA program. "We hope people can gain some skills that will take them to the next level."
